A Not-Really-New Dresser

Enter: Dresser that came from my grandparents' guest bedroom many many years ago.
I've used this dresser for several years now, and it used to have a matching mirror to hang above it but it somehow got lost, broken, or donated before I received it. Needless to say, there are drawers that go with it, I just needed the before picture...after I had started stripping the drawers. Yes, another blogger fail on my part!

I've been holding off on redoing this dresser for awhile now for several reasons: 1.) Where else would I keep my socks while I'm redoing it; 2.) I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with it; 3.) The idea of prepping it for painting and/or staining pretty much made me cringe. Once I found ASCP though the reason for hating prep work is pretty much out the window and I was in the middle of unpacking everything anyway so what's another week living out of a suitcase?

So I broke out the Furniture Refinisher (which I LOVE because it is easy and I don't have to sand) and got to work...

...on the porch...yes, I am a landlord's worst nightmare.

I originally planned on using Minwax PolyShades because who doesn't like a good shortcut?

Um...FAIL!
I followed the directions PERFECTLY and still dried with these bubbly looking spots.

Cue second appearance of the Furniture Refinisher...
And enter my trusty, favorite Minwax Dark Walnut stain.

And yes, in case you are wondering, I am still on the porch...

Now it is time for the ASCP fun to begin!

At this point it was dark outside and since ASCP doesn't kill too many brain cells I decided to move the party indoors.

After coating on 2 layers of clear coats, putting the drawer pulls (which I had spray painted) back on, and reassembling the whole thing here is the final product:

I got lazy...the red drawers are spray painted.

And just to remind you how it looked before:

I will be sharing this at the Linky Parties below!

  1. Looks great. I really like how you mixed it up. Painting only part of it looks cool. Don't you feel so relieved that it's done? I'm in the middle of a project right now, and I'm taking a break. LOL.

    1. It seems like it took forever to finish! Now I'm just wondering how long I need to air out the drawers before I can put my clothes back in without them smelling like paint fumes...

Good luck on your project! What is it?

    1. Thanks for visiting! I understand - I had to okay it through my mom (it was actually my dad's parents but you know you always gotta clear it with Momma!) before I started - didn't want to mess up some family heirloom without realizing it!

  3. Gorgeous! I'm a big fan of the paint and wood combo. Especially where the wood is so beautiful. It would be a shame to cover all that lovely wood grain with paint, you achieved just the right balance.

    1. Thanks! I wasn't completely sure at first - but after a few days (it takes that long for me to decide if I like it or not) I decided to keep it...my other thought was to paint the outside of the drawers a lightish grey or pink color, but I'm glad I kept with the wood.

  5. What a great redo, love that you left the top and drawers natural. We did the same thing to our buffet. Love the two tone look. The dresser's wood is too pretty to paint! Thanks for sharing your creative inspiration with Sunday’s Best – you helped make the party a success!

  11. This looks great!
I have been thinking of doing this same thing with a chest of drawers in my kitchen, that I use for linens and things.
I love the wood on top and the drawer fronts.
